1st female, 2nd overall, course record: 6 hrs

The St Peter's Way is an ancient off-road trail of 43 ish miles running through most of Essex, starting at Chipping Ongar and finishing in the sea, or thereabouts.

It was also to be my first real attempt at an ultra in a long time; last year I was unprepared for a 100km as was still distracted by pro triathlon, so that was my first DNF, at 60km, which was humbling, but necessa...

Seventh - I'll take that in a championship race in winter! With $100,000 in the prize purse and pay cheques for the top-10 (and I believe every one of the top 10 has won an Ironman event before), it was very competitive. Every minute a pro woman ran through the finish chute at the end, so it was a relatively tight affair (as I thought it might be). Whilst perhaps not every second counted, you certainly couldn't afford a mechanical or a...

You know the times. You get home from work late or the alarm squawks at you way too early. You feel tired, sluggish, and certainly in no mood to train.

No fear. Thanks to these tips, you will now be able to conquer the slumps that every single athlete has to battle.

Here’s the plan:

1. Do the warm up, then decide. I never make a call on a session until I have done the warm up. Once that initial bout of oxygen hits your mu...

Combat Pre-Competition Nerves FOREVER!

The hard training is done. It's time to race. However, the last 24 hours can be crucial in the makings of a good performance or bad.

It's normal to have pre-race nerves. Advantageous in fact: a bit of adrenaline helps one fly. We should embrace the jittery feeling and accept it will be present at any race you care about.

However, it’s a double-edged sword: we don’t want those nerves to get out of con...

Responding to a somewhat sucky season

Don’t Quit

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit – rest if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns.
As everyone of us sometimes learns.
And many a fellow turns about when he might have won h...

Challenge Weymouth ETU Long Distance Champs

It was great to meet up with all the other elites at Challenge Weymouth: there was a fantastic pre-race atmosphere; what a lovely bunch of people.

But oh dear. From a magical 2 year comeback into triathlon to 2015 – year of the abyss. Injury and burnout have put pay to race results but behind the scenes, it has been non-stop progress. I have built a team and environment that is conducive to hig...

Ode to Obsession

All Jack did each day was train,
From social norms he would abstain.
Triathlon was his total life,
Surprise, surprise, he had no wife.

He thought that bikes and gels and things,
Would give him all the joy life brings,
But when Jack did a race and lost it,
He took his bike – away he tossed it!

“What a foolish man I’ve been,
To think triathlon is the dream,
I’ll go and live a normal life,
And nab myself a decent wife.”

He ba...
